Trackmania 2 Customization Tutorials
« on: September 11, 2011, 09:49:44 AM »

Before I start, most of this will be copypasta from http://tutorials.mania-creative.com/ but with changes specific to Trackmania 2.

Tutorials:

Custom Stickers

You will need:

  • An image that you want to use as a sticker
  • Photoshop
  • NVIDIA Plugin for Photoshop

Alternatively you can use GIMP and this plugin but it's not covered in this tutorial.

First, download the NVIDIA Plugin and install it.

Open Photoshop and open the image you want to use as a sticker. For this tutorial, I will be using this image of Snoop Dogg.

Create a new layer. Then select your entire image (CTRL + A), cut it (CTRL + X) and paste it (CTRL + V) on to the new layer. Delete the empty background layer.

Click Image -> Canvas Size... (ALT + CTRL + C). Select Percent in the drop down menu, change both values to 110 and press OK. Sometimes if your image comes too close to the edge of your canvas, it will bleed colours when you apply the sticker to a car.

The image will have to be square later and now is a good time to do so. Click Image -> Canvas Size... (ALT + CTRL + C) and select Pixels from the drop down menu. Change the lowest number to match your highest number and press OK.

Now it's time to add a background. Create a new layer and fill it with a colour that doesn't match your image. I normally use black here but considering that my image of Snoop Dogg is pretty dark (inb4 racets), I'll be using purple. Drag this layer under your image layer.

Now for the alpha channel. Hold CTRL and left click on the thumbnail of the layer your image is on. Then click on the Channels tab above the layers. Usually, Photoshop will create an alpha channel automatically but if you don't see an Alpha 1 channel here, keep reading. With your image still selected, click on the Create a new Channel button (bottom-right, beside a trashcan). Then, fill the selection on this channel with white. The white area determines which parts of the image are shown, you have to be careful with this when using more complex image shapes.

Now it's time to prepare to save the file. If you used the default directories when installing Trackmania 2, open your documents folder and browse to ManiaPlanet\Media\Painter. Now create a folder named Stickers and inside that folder, create another folder and name it after your image. I'll be naming my folder SnoopDogg. As you can see, I have a few stickers already.

Switch back to Photoshop, then click on the Layers tab and click your image layer. Now click File -> Save as... and browse to that folder you just created. Then select Targa (.tga) from the Format drop down list and name your file Sticker. It must be named Sticker, otherwise it will not work. Press save and then press OK when the Targa Options pop up appears, you don't need to change anything.

Final step, making the icon. Click Image -> Image Size... (ALT + CTRL + I) and change both Pixel Dimensions to 64. Then select File -> Save as... and browse to that same folder as before. Select D3D/DDS (.dds) from the Format drop down list and name your file Icon. As before, it must be named Icon, otherwise it will not work. Click save and the NVIDIA Plugin pop up will appear, make sure it is set to DXT1 RGB 4 bpp | no alpha (it's the first option in the drop down list) and do not change anything else, just click Save.

Now open Trackmania 2, select Editors -> Paint a car and select a car to paint. Then click on the Stickers button and browse through the Stickers using the arrows on the left until you find your custom sticker. Then slap some on the car.

And you're done!

Custom Horns

You will need:

  • A sound that you want to use as your horn
  • Audacity

First, download and install Audacity if you don't already have it.

I usually get sounds/music from Youtube using this website. For this tutorial, I'll be using the .mp3 of this.

Dr Dre - The Next Episode

Please note that the maximum length your horn can be is 10 seconds. So obviously, I won't be using the entire song.

First, I'm going to extract the part of the song that I want to use. It's the "SMOKE WEED ERRYDAY" at the end of the song.

So, open the .mp3 file in Audacity and select the part of the song you want to use.

Next, cut the selection (CTRL + X), then select all (CTRL + A) and delete. Then paste your selection (CTRL + V). Your selection will paste at the beginning of the track so you may have to scroll back to the start to see it.

This is the most important part. Click on the black triangle pointing downwards to the left of the track and select Split Stereo to Mono. Then click the black X in the upper left corner of the bottom track to delete it.

Optional: Custom horns can sound low in Trackmania 2 so you can increase the gain on the track by moving the - + slider to the left of the track to make it louder. This can make the audio sound bad though. You can also try amplifying it by clicking Effects -> Amplify.

Finally, click File -> Export and browse to Documents\ManiaPlanet\Skins\Horns. Select WAV (Microsoft) from the Save as type drop down menu, name it whatever you like and then click Save.

Finally, load up Trackmania 2, click on Profile and then click on the Horn icon beside your avatar. Select General Horn and browse until you find your custom horn.

Here's a video of my result.

And you're done!

Locators

You will need:

  • A text editor (Notepad is fine)
  • A file host (See below)

By default, custom content in Trackmania is shared via P2P. This can be pretty slow and it can be taxing on your connection too. Imagine playing with 40 other players and having to share your custom content via P2P with each of them. This is where locators come in.

A locator is basically a text file that contains a URL to custom content hosted online. This means that when you join a game, the other players will download your custom content from the URL in the locator file instead of downloading it via P2P. This not only saves bandwidth but it also allows the other players to download your custom content faster.

You'll need a file host that allows direct linking (i.e. no waiting times for downloads, the file downloads as soon as you visit the URL). For now, I am using Dropbox although I'm not sure if I'm even allowed to use it for hosting these files but fuck the police. An alternative is FileDen which would probably be better in the long run.

You can create locators for all custom content including horns and I'll show you how to do both.

First, you'll want to make sure you can see the file extensions in your folders. In Windows 7/Vista, open a folder and click Organize -> Folder and search options -> View -> Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. On Windows XP and earlier, upgrade your shit, it's 2011. :3

When you paint a car, the skin is saved in a .zip file in Documents\ManiaPlanet\Skins\Vehicles\CanyonCar. Browse to the folder that contains the custom content you want to create a locator for, right click -> New -> Text document. Name this file exactly the same name as the file you're creating it for and add .loc to the end. I'll be creating a locator for ThatDog.zip so I named my locator ThatDog.zip.loc. The locator must have the same name and be in the same folder as the file you're creating it for.

Now you'll want to upload the file you're creating the locator for to your selected file host and copy the URL for it. Here's how it looks on Dropbox.

Now, open the .loc file you created earlier in Notepad, paste the URL into it and save. I'm using Notepad++ because I'm awesome.

As I said earlier, you can do this for any custom content. Here's how my Gal O Sengen horn is set up.

And you're done!

GIMP works as well, apparently, if you have the plugins for it.

If you run the installer it will auto detect any copies of Photoshop installed. It detected my pirated portable copy.

Edit: Lone told me it didn't auto detect his copy, if anyone needs the files, I'll upload them.

Your computer is feeling depressed, it needs change in its life. I suggest you do what you can to make it feel better, like buying it a new outfit.
